Whilst Emotional Intelligence has for decades been presented as a top leadership competence, emotion itself remains the substrate upon which emotional intelligence plays out, and is one of the most researched human traits, yet still not fully understood. Why?

Perhaps because emotions are one of the most intricate aspects of human nature, and pinning them down is difficult due to their multifaceted nature. Unlike simple biological functions, emotions emerge from a combination of cognitive, physiological, social, and cultural influences. They are dynamic, not static and to make things worse, can be conflicting or mixed - the way love can coexist with anger, or pride with fear. They are shaped by experience and context, and vary from moment to moment.

Moreover, contrary to popular belief, emotions don’t just live inside us. They ripple outward and affect everyone around us—family, colleagues, even entire communities. This is known as emotional contagion, and it's a powerful rippling force.
